NVB publishes framework for bouts with head contact from the age of 16

In an evaluation of the ban on kicks and punches to the head for minors, the VA (Nederlandse Vechtsportautoriteit, the Dutch Martial Arts Authority) concluded this year that there is scope to adjust the ban. Under strict conditions, top talents would be able to prepare for a career in elite sport. The Nederlandse Vechtsportbond (Dutch Martial Arts Federation, NVB) has published the framework for this.

Until the VA was established, children could be struck on the head with punches and kicks during kickboxing and muaythai bouts. There were no restrictions whatsoever, with all the attendant risk of injury and brain damage. Partly in view of new scientific insights into possible brain damage from head contact, the VA imposed a restriction that was introduced in stages. For several years now, no techniques to the head have been permitted in bouts between minors.

In 2024, the VA evaluated the measure. The main conclusion was that the measure is still justified, and that new studies underline the need to protect children's brains. At the same time, the VA saw scope for exceptions, namely for top talents who want to compete with the international elite from the age of 18.

It was up to the Nederlandse Vechtsportbond to develop a framework within which top talents can prepare for high-level bouts with head contact in an optimal and responsible manner. This week, the NVB published this framework on the federation's website. The new regulations will take effect on 1 January 2025. Athletes, coaches and promoters with questions can put them to the federation.
