Vacancy: Board Member Nederlandse Vechtsportautoriteit

The Nederlandse Vechtsportautoriteit (Dutch Martial Arts Authority) was established with the support of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (ministerie van VWS) and the national sports umbrella organisation NOC*NSF as the regulator for kickboxing, Thai boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) in the Netherlands. Its mission is a healthy, safe and well-regulated martial arts sector. The board of the VA sets the course of the organisation, which consists of a number of office staff and a team of committed auditors. In addition, there is a Supervisory Board (Raad van Toezicht) that holds the board to account.

The board consists of independent martial arts enthusiasts with professionally relevant knowledge and expertise. The current board includes a physician, a lawyer and a criminal justice researcher, among others. They work on an unpaid basis for the Dutch martial arts sector, taking the general public interest as the starting point for their policy.

There is a vacancy for a new board member. We are looking for someone with an affinity for martial arts, who is well versed in Dutch public administration and is willing to take on the communications portfolio. We are thinking, for example, of someone with experience as a mayor, alderman, municipal council member, member of parliament or policy adviser.

The board members meet monthly on a Thursday evening. They attend a meeting of an advisory committee three times a year. A few times a year they attend a martial arts event. In September, the board holds an annual off-site session with the office and the Supervisory Board.

Profile of the board member we are looking for:

• Experience in public administration, familiar with Dutch governance
• A neutral position within the sector, in keeping with an independent authority
• Willing to take on the communications portfolio
• A team player with a constructive attitude
• Motivated to move the martial arts sector forward
• An eye for the social context of martial arts
