VA helps Almere with policy on combat sports events

The municipality of Almere has adopted new policy on combat sports events. As a result, two successful galas were recently held again at the Topsportcentrum. The Vechtsportautoriteit (Dutch Combat Sports Authority) helped the municipality develop the policy.

Almere had mixed experiences with combat sports events. Some events were well organised, on other occasions things were rather chaotic. The municipality had therefore become reluctant to grant permit applications from promoters, and even temporarily closed the door. The VA therefore entered into discussions with the municipality, the police and promoters to see under which conditions events could take place again.

Policy officers from the municipality and the VA then looked together at where the policy could be improved. The aim was to make well-organised combat sports events possible. With the VA's help, Almere arrived at clear policy that gives promoters room to organise events, while allowing the municipality to properly safeguard safety.

Recently, two combat sports events were held at the Topsportcentrum Almere for the first time in a while. Both promoters and the municipality were satisfied with how they went.
