Anti-Doping Authority information session: know what to expect

2 min read

On 1 September, the first information session of the Dutch Anti-Doping Authority (Dopingautoriteit) for combat sports took place at Papendal Sports Centre. From this year onwards, competitive fighters at all levels may be tested. It is therefore important that they and their coaches know exactly what doping is and how testing works.

Trainers, ring doctors, officials and other parties involved were given all the ins and outs by Wendy Schootemeijer of the Dopingautoriteit (Dutch Anti-Doping Authority). She explained which substances are considered doping, how tests are carried out, and what rights and obligations athletes and coaches have, for instance in the event of a positive test.

It was an interactive session with plenty of room for questions from the audience. For example, about how it is determined who will be tested. How long does it take before the result is available? There are also questions about recognising safe and unsafe nutritional supplements, and about the use of medication. These are indeed important points of attention for athletes who do not want to accidentally take a prohibited substance into their body. A positive test can lead to a serious suspension. Proving that you ingested something by accident is difficult. It is therefore better to prevent it.

Thanks to the agreement between the Vechtsportautoriteit and the Dopingautoriteit, doping testing in combat sports will now take place on a structural basis. It is important that everyone in combat sports is well informed. This certainly applies to athletes, trainers and coaches as well. That is why the VA and the Dopingautoriteit are organising a number of information sessions at various locations in the country. New sessions will be announced shortly. Keep an eye on our newsletter as well.

The Dopingautoriteit has also developed an e-learning programme for athletes, trainers and other parties involved. These are short courses with a final test. In a very accessible way, you learn everything about the anti-doping rules. After completing an e-learning module, you receive a certificate from the Dopingautoriteit. Participation is free of charge.
