On Saturday evening, an athlete was seriously injured during an MMA bout. The Nederlandse Vechtsportautoriteit (VA, the Dutch Martial Arts Authority) is currently investigating the circumstances and the handling of the incident.
A martial arts athlete was seriously injured at a martial arts event last weekend. The referee had to stop an MMA bout when one of the participants was no longer able to continue fighting. The athlete concerned was stabilised on site and taken to hospital by ambulance.
The Nederlandse Vechtsportautoriteit is in contact with all those involved and is currently investigating exactly what happened. The VA wishes the athlete a swift recovery.
Update 20 March: The VA has reached the preliminary conclusion that the incident of Saturday 7 March at Dutch Combat Events in Landgraaf was a tragic accident during a sports bout that, as far as we have been able to establish, was conducted in accordance with the rules. We have found no indications that the accident was caused or aggravated by culpable careless conduct or by any breach of safety or other regulations. At this time, the VA does not consider further investigation or disciplinary proceedings necessary, but will of course reconsider this position should new or different information come to light.
