Rules for youth MMA established

From 1 September 2022, young people aged 12 and over can compete in mixed martial arts. For this purpose, the Dutch Combat Sports Authority has developed a youth regulation together with experts.
In mixed martial arts competitions, better known as MMA, techniques from different combat sports are combined. Participants use boxing combinations, karate kicks, judo throws and wrestling holds, among other things.
The rules under which adults practise this sport are not suitable for minors. The sport is complex and uses techniques that are too risky for children. Because the sport is steadily growing in popularity and demand from young people for an adapted form increased, the Dutch Combat Sports Authority developed an adapted set of rules. Kicks and strikes to the head and techniques that can cause joint injuries are prohibited under these rules.
The youth rules take effect on 1 September 2022. From that date, MMA matches and competitions can be organised for young people aged 12 and over. This adapted set of rules makes it possible for young athletes to enjoy the sport and gain experience in a relatively safe setting.
