Subject to conditions, the government has brought the reopening of gyms forward from 1 September to 1 July. To make this intended resumption genuinely possible, a new protocol for combat sports gyms had to be drawn up under the leadership of the VA. In cooperation with NOC*NSF and, above all, many gym owners, a draft protocol was submitted to the authorities last week, and it has now been approved.
After a great deal of email traffic and an extensive online session with gym owners, the VA drew up the indoor sports protocol for combat sports gyms within the frameworks set by the Dutch public health institute RIVM and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. On the basis of the final protocol, gyms must work out their own protocol, tailored to their own situation, and submit it to their municipality. They now have two weeks left to do so.
Please note! On 24 June, the government will make a final decision on the intended reopening of gyms. A resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic could still throw a spanner in the works. Only once Prime Minister Rutte confirms the reopening on 24 June will the decision be official and the protocol definitively apply.
The new protocol sets out how athletes can train indoors as safely as possible and how transmission of the COVID-19 virus can be limited: from athlete to athlete, from athlete to staff member, between staff members, and from staff member to athlete.
